Wooden Boats Everywhere
The main reason for my weekend away was a visit to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St Michaels, Maryland, for their annual Antique & Classic Boat Festival & Coastal Arts Fair. hosted by the Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the Antique & Classic Boat Society,
I arrived just after the gates opened, and was glad I was able to walk around for a while before the crowds got thick. It was definitely a warm and sunny day, but there was also a nice breeze, so it was manageable, especially with the cold adult beverages for sale.
The event looked to be well-organized, with a nice variety of sail and motor boats from a large range of eras. Many were in the water and drove to the show, while some were on trailers, most of these hauled in with vehicles of similar vintage as their boat, which was a very cool way of transporting. There was also a large craft section where vendors had their seashore inspired goods for sale, along with a few food trucks.
I had never been to this event before, but was glad I made the trip. There were classes or presentations almost every hour throughout the day, and staff were abundant, friendly, and always ready to answer questions or give impromptu presentations. I met a lot of passionate people and enjoyed many conversations as the day progressed, including a couple different chats that may be inspiring future activities. More to come on that…
The museum itself was interesting, as well, with many static displays showing the maritime history of the Chesapeake Bay. There is a working shipyard, where numerous boats of different size were actively being refurbished. There were workers available to answer questions and to give short demonstrations of the difficult and often tedious work of restoring these old wooden boats. While not a large museum, the whole grounds span a decent space, so bring your walking shoes. Another high recommendation if you are ever in the area.
With a storm on its way, I ended my trip just as the Museum grounds were closing for the day and began the long drive home. With all the walking in Annapolis last night, and Pickering Creek this morning along with the entire day walking around the CBMM, my legs were shot and the drive home was a nice respite. I can’t wait to go back, though!
